Rhianna - man down fuss/ Beyonce - do girls really run the world?

Rhianna -man down video

There has been some controversy over rhi-rhi's new video where in the opening scene she shoots a man dead, the video then flashs back to the previous day and it shows that this man had raped her. Tres depressing man. I love the reggae sound of the song, the lyrics I find are not bad in that she is singing about the remorse she feels about carrying out the act, however some people are unimpressed saying that the video is condoning the use of violence and that she is a role-model etc. What do you think bdss'ers? I personally can not see what all the fuss is about purely because there are so many violent programs on tv, and music video's etc that get shown, we'd need to ban them all! Why kick up a fuss about this one video when everything else is acceptable. You all may disagree, so share please.

Another song that has got people talking is Beyonce's video, Run the world (girls)

Do we really run the world??? Does this song empower women? Myself and my 16 year old nephew were listening to this song together recently and he was adamant that the song was just wrong, he totally disagreed with the message. Another person that strongly disagrees is:

What do you think BDSS'ers? I think she raises some serious points, there is still a lot of work to do! But I do like the beat of the song and I do like the idea of women running the world.

So BDSS'ers do you have any thoughts or opinions on either songs, videos or debates they have stirred up or are you like me just sort of yawn lol! We must not take these music videos so seriously!

  1. The rhianna video is not that bad personally. However the fact that this woman was the center of such a public stir over domestic violence, giving interviews talking about being a role model for women who hv been tru da same makes me think it would be more tasteful of her to not glamourise violence. As for women running the world,I think beyonces the wrong 1 to ask us. If it means via women with true talent swapping using their great vocal talents for aggressive booty shakin every 10 mins n inspiring women to follow by doing the same aka nicole sherzwatever n the new age clones gassed off of crazy in love, women run the entire universe. She's so powerful she is swapping her christian choir girl roots for a sex on steroids image for more benjamins what a tragedy am I the only 1 who wonders what message this gives kids. The house of commons, congress and analysis of the most powerful figuers in the world paint a diff story but these generations hv no care for these things only tv, the mindstate of an individual will determine their perspective on that 1. Nice article ladies.

  2. Just because they are so many shows with violence doesn't then mean we need another video, film, whatever to add to it so in that light i disagree with you. It is a sensitive subject Rhianna herself went through her own battle and let the police handle it so now what has changed, it just goes to show that, to her there is a difference between her real self and her performance persona which clearly condones violence and privately lets the law do what its supposed to do in cases such as this, sad really because that sends mixed messages to those who follow Rhianna.

Personally B maybe very wrong but please let us not act like women have not come a long way and like they are no outstanding women out there. We should we constantly say aren't, we haven't a stride is a stride even if it is small. Do we literally run the world no are we marginalised yes have we made some sort of head way YES does it have to be a woman on tv to rpove we have made head way no i look a little closer to home, my mother, is a perfect example of taking on the stereo type being a black manager of the breast unit at the royal free where ones that would never happen she managed 18 white folks so yes my mamma runs that world, my cousin is the youngest manager of Rhymans for north London so yes she does run that world Rome was not built in a day. I refuse to look at things negatively and though they are odds against us if we things will change, we just need to keep going. I do not refute that those stats are right but a change will come so long as we keep going into men's areas and showing that yes we can.

Would you rather she said we don't run this world, this stat is against us and it will be hard to make a change so sit back and just enjoy what we have because at least we have something. Right now i am studying law which is by tradition not women friendly, black friendly,or age friendly but because all that is against me should i just accept and say i'll just go be a legal executive heck no i'm still doing law because for me i serve a God that makes a way where it seems impossible and where man thinks it can't be done my God says yes i can and that is all i need.

  3. mfmu - They are indeed women running their own worlds, which is fantastic. However there are alot of women who are suffering out there, I guess the point that she was making was the fact that whilst its nice to be singing who run the world? girls! There are some women who are not so fortunate. There is nothing wrong with highlighting this fact. And like don says lets not get caught up in booty shaking beyonces hype.

As for Rhi Rhi I do think its a music video, half the crap depicted in them are not real, so lets not starting taking this one so literally, we know she hasn't shot anyone.

  4. Personally, I agree with you Sel – I’m no massive Rhianna’s fan but at the same time, I don’t think her video is all that bad (not compared to some others she has done!) And I also do not think she is ‘glamorising’ violence; I see it as an example of the possible consequences of such assaults. If she had starred in a film where she’s portraying the life of an abused woman (i.e. Precious) would the critics tarnish her with the same brush?

As for running the world, it’s probably a redundant statement in all honesty if taken literally – the lady in the video does make some very valid points but at the same time, men wouldn’t have anything to rule or run if it weren’t for us women giving birth to the next generation of world runners; be they male or female!! Hahaha

  5. On the violence, rhianna is not the worst advocate out there... me personally, cant take the messages being rammed down our throats nowadays but at the same time i can see this one as a good one in that, if a man rape a woman, any bad karma for him, is good karma...saying all that maybe after her and cris brown she should be a little shy of violence (it begets itself)..but anyway..hopefully that makes sense to somebody.....on beyonce well...again on a personal level i cant stand any kind of battle of the sex type talk cause at the core of humanity is male and female in equal proportions of importance so although things are not quite balanced (not in the favour of women i believe) the best message would be one of harmony between the male and female so it probably aint the best shit to be peddling to our youngsters for a good future..that was quick and off the cuff still

  6. i forget to mention willie lynch on the making of a slave...playing males and females off of one another..was a part of the strategy..so you see how them kind of tunes can be detrimental to us all as a whole

  7. Great post Sel, I'm with you Debs us women bear the men of the world! Haha (but it takes a man and women to create so I don't really know were I'm going with that point!)

I like what you said CMF about harmony but then harmony does not always sell records.

I think just because it's a violent video does not mean she is promoting violence, If anything the video has acted as a vehicle for discussion.

As for Beyonce the whole build up and hype around the release of the song and then the video just shows what it's all about... Sales!
People going deep with analysis about do women really run the world and talking facts and statistic just seems over the top considering their analysing a Beyonce song!

Although I did find what the lady said hilarious especially when she was like "don't call me a b*tch!" lmao :-)
